The ensemble RITORNELLO was founded in 2011 by Elektra Papasimakis, Amalia Kountouri, Alexandros Kalkos and Vassilis Tiggirides. The 4 musicians specialize in the interpretation of early music on period instruments and for that purpose have attended various seminars and summer academies in Greece and abroad. The ensemble Ritornello has participated in Festivals and has given concerts in Athens and other Greek towns and islands. They have recorded a concert for the Third Programme of the Greek National Radio and have taken part in the festivities for the celebration of the three-year anniversary of the Acropolis Museum.


Elektra PAPASIMAKIS
Elektra Papasimakis was born in Athens and grew up on Ikaria Island. 
She studied Classical Singing with Mechtild Stamatakis and got her singing Diploma in 2010. As a singer she has attended numerous master classes with Dimitra Theodossiou, Alison Pearch, Birgit Nickl, Michael Chance and Nikolas Spanos and has participated in a number of concerts, recordings and musical theater staging.

She started studying the recorder with the Greek Pipers Guild and from 2009 she has been studying the Baroque recorder and early music interpretation under the guidance of Dimitris Kountouras. 
She has attended various seminars for the interpretation of early music with Christophe Rousset, Takashi Watanabe, Gordon Murray and Eugene Michelangeli.
In 2012 she participated in the orchestra performing John Blow's “Venus and Adonis” presented during the works of the Music Village and in 2012-2013 she will be holding the role of Despina in W.A. Mozart's “Così fan tutte”, a production of “The Opera of the Young”.

Elektra is also a graduate of Music Theory & Harmony, Counterpoint and Fugue. She teaches the recorder and singing at “Mantzaros” and “Ethniko” (Gyzi) conservatories in Athens.

 

Amalia KOUNTOURI
Amalia Kountouri was born in Athens in 1969.

She studied the flute with Janina Batko and got her Flute Diploma in 1992.

She has attended flute seminars with Marc Grauwels, Benoit Frommanger and Julian Elvira and seminars for the interpretation of early music with Christophe Rousset, Takashi Watanabe and Eugene Michelangeli.
Amalia Kountouri is currently studying the recorder with Dimitris Kountouras and jazz improvisation with Sylvios Syrros.
She is a member of various chamber music groups and also plays Brazilian bossa nova and Jazz.

In 2009 she started collaborating with pianist Myrto Akrivou exploring the modern flute-piano repertoire.
She teaches the flute and chamber music in “En Organois” and “Ethniko” (N. Heraklio) conservatories in Athens.


Alexandros KALKOS
Alexandros Kalkos was born in Athens in 1969. 
He studied classical guitar with Evangelos Boudounis graduating from Athenaeum Conservatory in 1994. From 1997 to 1999 he attended seminars with Roland Dyens in France. He has participated in master classes with R. Aussell, D. Russell, M. Barrueco, O. Ghiglia, H. Kappel and D. Starobin.
As a member of the ensembles Duo Capricorn and Con Fusion he has given numerous concerts around Greece performing music by contemporary composers.
In the field of Early Music, he has participated in Seminars and master classes with Paul O’ Dette, Rolf Lislevand, Eduardo Eguez, Andrea Damiani, Thør-Harald Johnsen and Claudia Caffagni in Italy and Austria, as well as with Nikos Panagiotides and Theodoros Kitsos in Greece.
Alexandros Kalkos is very much interested in historic performance practice of plucked instruments from the renaissance to the first half of the 19th century and he is playing vihuela, renaissance guitar, baroque guitar, archlute and romantic guitar.
He teaches classical guitar at the Conservatory of the Hellenic American Educational Foundation and at the “Ethniko” Conservatory (Maroussi). Also, from 2012 he has started a class of early plucked instruments at the “Mantzaros” Conservatory.


Vassilis TIGGIRIDES
Vassilis Tiggirides was born in Athens in 1960.

He commenced classical guitar studies in 1974 and graduated in 1987. In the same year he also graduated from the Athens University Law School.
Apart from numerous guitar master classes, he has also attended early music courses under Panagiotis Adam.

His public performances include both solo recitals as well as chamber music concerts.

He has also broadcasted on Greek National Television and Radio.
He teaches guitar at the “Ethniko” Conservatory (Peristeri, Glyfada and P. Faliro)
His first recording is «Works for violin and guitar» by Chrysanthos Mouzakitis.
His first solo album, "Lend Your Ears To My Sorrow” (released in 2005), contains early music played on a 7-string guitar. 
Desirous of a more authentic approach to early music, he has moved on from the classical guitar and is currently playing the Baroque lute.

His main lute teacher is Nikos Panagiotides. He has also attended courses by Christopher Wilson, Andrea Damiani, Paul O’ Dette, Thør-Harald Johnsen, Rolf Lislevand & Eduardo Egüez.
